Understanding Statutory GST Tax Invoices in India
A GST Tax Invoice is an official commercial document issued by a registered supplier under Section 31 of the CGST Act. It records transaction particulars, taxable value of supply, and the exact statutory tax levied (CGST, SGST, or IGST), serving as the legal basis for the recipient to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC).
Under GST compliance rules, every business exceeding threshold turnover limits must issue serial-numbered invoices containing the supplier GSTIN, buyer tax ID, time of supply, Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes, and place of supply.
Mandatory GSTIN & HSN Codes
Invoices must display the 15-digit GSTIN of both parties. HSN codes classify goods while SAC codes identify services to establish correct statutory tax slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%).
Input Tax Credit (ITC) Rules
Buyers can only claim credit for taxes paid on commercial purchases if they hold a valid tax invoice reflecting matching figures in the GSTN portal (GSTR-2B).
Sequential Numbering Standards
Tax law requires consecutive sequential numbering unique for each financial year. Alphanumeric series with slashes or dashes are fully supported.
Digital UPI Payment Integration
Embedding dynamic UPI QR codes on B2C and B2B invoices facilitates zero-fee bank transfers, reducing payment realization cycles.
